Harley’s Story

Harley was referred to our YES Employment Service by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) after completing his studies at Suffolk One College. At the time, he was feeling overwhelmed and unsure about his next steps, lacking a clear sense of direction for his future.

Through our tailored one-to-one sessions, we focused on boosting Harley’s confidence and developing his core employability skills. Together, we worked on CV writing, interview preparation, and crafting effective cover letters that highlighted his strengths and interests.

Recognising Harley’s enthusiasm for hands-on, practical work, we identified a suitable opportunity for him to participate in a short Multi-Skills course delivered by Lofty Heights. This four-week programme provided valuable experience across a range of construction-related skills and included the chance to gain a CSCS card—an essential qualification for entering the construction industry.

By the end of the course, Harley had not only developed practical skills but also a renewed sense of direction and confidence about his career path.

Following the successful completion of this course, we reached out to Suffolk Highways through Inspire to explore potential opportunities. As a result, Harley was invited to attend an Insight Day, where he toured the facilities and met with current employees to gain a better understanding of the workplace and expectations.

Harley embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm. His positive attitude and genuine interest in the field led to an invitation for a week-long work experience placement with Suffolk Highways. He made such a strong impression that, by the end of his first day, Harley was offered a job—with the option of choosing between an apprenticeship or a full-time role.

He ultimately accepted the opportunity and is now on a promising path with Suffolk Highways.

Harley came into this opportunity well-prepared, having previously completed a Level 2 qualification in Maintenance Operations (Construction) at Suffolk New College (September 2022 – July 2024). This solid foundation, combined with his motivation to learn and grow within a dynamic work environment, made him an ideal candidate for a practical role in the sector.

Harley’s story is a powerful example of how targeted support, access to training, and strong employer engagement can come together to create life-changing outcomes for young people.
